Synopsis:
Mangu High School is among the few top schools in Kenya. It was ranked in first position in last years national high school exams and it emerged among the top five schools this year. It has a population of just over 800 students which use the IBonus system hereafter known as pesapoa. Pesapoa is a smartcard system that uses contactless smartcards, a terminal and server software.
Detail:
Pesapoa provides a reliable way to keep money secure and with the student at all times. The students use the card as a debit card and withdraw cash from the bursar’s office. This means that the students only walk around with cash for immediate needs minimizing chances of theft.
The pesapoa card also doubles up as an identification card for the students with the schools logo and student details appearing quite clearly on the card. The bursar also uses the card to authenticate its holder.
The Ibonus system has been in use in the school for 3 months and so far has posted positive results among the student and staff fraternity.
The system is run by the school bursar who is in charge of the student’s cash. An application was designed to pull information from the database and thus ease the bursars work.
The application can produce reports based on each student i.e.
- the balance on each card either per student or the
- Cumulative total of all the cards in the school.
